Madeline Lavosky is a fiber artist, textile designer, and garment maker. She recently graduated from the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) with a BFA in Fiber and a concentration in Experimental Fashion. She is originally from Montclair, New Jersey. She is interested mostly in textiles yet made through various processes. These include digital printing, weaving, silkscreening, and direct application. In her work, she uncovers her mother's history as an immigrant coming to the US from Cuba in the 1960's and then growing up in New Jersey. There are many unanswered questions, such as “how has her mother's culture impacted her own culture? how does this lead to a lack of cultural identity? and how does this confusion tie into Cuban history?” She also explores how tourism has affected Cuba and the United States. Many of her textiles and garments revolve around these issues. She creates patterns by using photos of her family, drawings and paintings because breaking this imagery down allows her to make sense of it all.
